During hot rolling of bars, a certain amount of carbon is lost from the bar surface through decarburization. This lost carbon can be restored through a furnace treating process known as carbon restoration.
Carbon restoration involves annealing bars in a controlled carbon-rich atmosphere. A secondary advantage of the process is a resultant refinement of grain structure.
The process is particularly advantageous where subsequent operations call for surface hardening by high frequency induction heating. Heretofore it has been necessary for the customer to remove “decarb” by machining to depth of 20 thousandths of an inch etc. Carbon restored bars eliminate this extra preparation, of course carbon restoration applies only to the cold drawn product inasmuch as “decarb” in turned bars will be removed during mill turning.
Lapham-Hickey for a number of years has been a supplier of carbon restored bars “rounds only” in the C1045/C1050 grades.

Lapham-Hickey is now carrying C1005 is place of ElectroMagnetic Iron, which is no longer manufactured. This grade of steel is comparable to Magnetic Iron, and meets most of the exacting requirements for a variety of electrical uses.
