Air-Hardening Ground Flat Stock

SAE Type A2

HEAT TREATMENT DATA

This is a fined grained, superior quality, electric furnace air hardening tool steel. Raw material is purchased to high standards which include acid disk inspection of billets and close control is maintained throughout its manufacture to assure you of a superior product. This is furnished ground to a smooth finish and 100% free of decarburization. Recommended for dies and sections offering high heat treating hazards and for long wear resisting service on blanking, trimming, forging and coining dies, bending tools, wear plates, gauges, etc.

TOLERANCES:

Under 1/4” is ground to plus .001” minus .001” on the thickness and plus .005” minus .000” on the width. Sizes 1/4” and larger are ground plus .010” to .015” on the thickness and plus .010” to .015” on the width. Lengths are all furnished on the plus side.

FORGING RANGE:

1700 degree Min. to 2050 degree Fahrenheit.

ANNEALING:

This material comes in well spherodized annealed form, READY-TO-USE. Should you ever have to anneal, pack, heat to 1550 degree Fahrenheit. Cool at 30 degrees per hour to 800 degrees and then air cool, or finish cool in the furnace.

HARDENING:

Either pack or use an atmosphere controlled furnace with a reducing atmosphere. Heat to 1750 degree Fahrenheit and air cool to 150 degrees and temper immediately. For light work temper by drawing two hours at heat, at 400 degrees to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. For heavy blanking work or high unit stress applications temper for two hours at 950 degrees Fahrenheit.

TEMPERING:

Temper immediately. The following is a table of hardnesses from 1 hour draw at different temperatures.

GRINDING:

Never grind a hardened but untempered piece. Wet grinding is always preferable. On hardened and tempered steel a wheel with a reasonably soft grain and an open structure is recommended. Use a coarse dress for heavy stock removal and a medium to medium fine dress for finishing.
